Job Description

Help manage local reporting with high impact in Alaska

The Anchorage Daily News, Alaska's most-read news source, is seeking an experienced news editor to help us produce and manage coverage across multiple platforms, serving a local and regional audience that holds us to a high standard.

We have a focus on and commitment to audiences — serving them, listening to them, growing them, retaining them. We’re big enough to have a robust readership and wide, deep reach, but small enough to make decisions quickly and for individuals to have an immediate and significant impact. We have smart, demanding readers who know what good journalism looks like, and the news editor we hope to hire would be joining a team of talented, experienced journalists who care about Alaska, the place and its people. We've won three Pulitzer Prizes for Public Service, most recently in 2020.

Our ideal candidate is someone with a proven record of producing journalism and managing coverage at a consistently high level. You're solid in the basics: You have strong news judgment and a strong foundation in journalism ethics, exceptional editing and writing skills and meticulous attention to detail. You have a demonstrated ability to produce — and help co-workers produce — engaging, accurate, meaningful content in a rich and competitive news environment. You understand online news.

Importantly, you're also an effective communicator and manager who cares about delivering reporters the support they need to execute coverage at a high level. You thrive when working with multiple reporters as part of a highly collaborative team, and you also see the big picture in terms of how what each team member is doing connects to colleagues' work across the newsroom, and to readers.

We're looking for someone with at least four years' experience as a news reporter or editor, and at least two years' experience in day-to-day news editing. We're especially interested in hearing from candidates who have any one of the following:

• A deep understanding of Alaska and important issues facing the state.

• A proven record deepening online audience engagement across platforms.

• Significant experience editing news stories about complex issues and policy for local audiences.

• Experience coordinating work across newsroom teams and across online and print-oriented platforms and workflows.

If you're interested in submitting an application but feel that you don't have the type of experience we've described here, or feel that you have important skills we haven't included, please don't hesitate to apply and tell us about yourself.

NOTE: We're also hiring for reporters, in case you're interested. You can find that posting here:

The Anchorage Daily News is independently owned and values an inclusive workforce reflecting a range of lived experiences, and we also value work-life balance and workplace flexibility. We're located in a diverse, highly livable city of nearly 300,000 with Alaska and all its outdoor opportunities right out the door. We offer competitive pay and benefits, and we’ll relocate the right candidate.

Email a resume, samples of your work and a note about why you want to work with us to Editor Vicky Ho at news-jobs@adn.com , or submit those materials via LinkedIn. This posting is slated to expire in early June.

All applicants are considered for all positions without regard to race, religion, color, sex, gender, sexual orientation, pregnancy, age, national origin, ancestry, physical/mental disability, medical condition, military/veteran status, genetic information, marital status, ethnicity, alienage or any other protected classification, in accordance with applicable federal, state, and local laws. Equal access to programs, services, and employment is available to all qualified persons.
