Job Overview
A Medical/Surgical Educator is a registered nurse who works as an expert practitioner within a specialized field of nursing. This individual is responsible for evaluating and implementing evidence-based practice, education, and professional development within critical care areas. They serve as a clinical resource for the Medical/Surgical units (3M, 4M, 5M) Nursing staff for bedside care. In addition, they will focus on new graduate nurses' development within the Medical/Surgical Departments.
Requirements
- Exercises sound judgment and discretion in professional duties.
- Leads and evaluates staff education and nursing practice needs using internal/external resources.
- Serves as a role model, clinical expert, and mentor; leads/participates in committees focused on nursing practice.
- Ensures compliance with regulatory standards and assists in policy/procedure updates.
- Coordinates and facilitates orientation, competencies, and preceptor programs.
- Collaborates with care teams to implement practice changes for quality improvement.
- Participates in hospital clinical orientation and nurse residency programs.
- Coordinates and teaches various courses (ACLS, BLS, PALS, TNCC, Arrhythmia, etc.).
- Conducts staff needs assessments and gap analyses to guide development initiatives.
- Supports staff progression from novice to expert using adult learning principles.
- Develops and delivers patient and staff education, including student rotations and interdepartmental programs.
- Leads professional nursing programs and serves as a preceptor for nursing students.
- Collaborates with community partners and transition coordinators for education planning.
- Utilizes evidence-based practices to guide quality improvements and PI projects.
- Oversees education on new equipment/products and tracks staff education compliance.
- Commits to personal professional growth with 15+ CE hours annually.
Qualification
- Graduate of an accredited NLN-approved RN program. Bachelor's degree in Nursing required, Master's degree in Education preferred
- Five (5) years of recent clinical experience in a Medical/Surgical setting. One year of education background preferred.
- Current SC nursing license or compact state license; BLS, ACLS required. Excellent communication skills, organizational skills, outcomes-oriented, and knowledge of education methods and clinical practice.
